Abstract

Post-hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) is a serious and often life-threatening complication which manifests with progressive jaundice, coagulopathy, frequent renal failure, ascites and encephalopathy. Historically, PHLF has been a poorly defined entity but there have been recent attempts to produce a definition incorporating the timing, degree of jaundice and coagulopathy. In this chapter, we will discuss the clinical issues and provide the reader with a comprehensive understanding of PHLF, and its management (including mitigating preoperative, operative and postoperative risk factors) based on the current evidence in the literature.
