Abstract
Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) describes a photophysical phenomenon inwhich molecular aggregate exhibits stronger emission than its single-moleculecounterpart. AIE research provides an excellent platform to explore aggregatebehaviours since it emphasizes the new properties endowed by molecularaggregates beyond the microscopic molecular level. The 21-year development ofAIE research has witnessed the great achievements in this area, includingmechanistic understanding,structure-property relationship, and high-techapplications.The achievements of AIE research demonstrate that many behavioursand functions that are absent in molecular species can be founded in molecularaggregates.
