Abstract

Pressure injury (PI), also known as pressure ulcer, is one of the most frequently occurring, painful, costly yet preventable adverse events in hospitals. Intensive care patients are at great risk of developing PIs dueto factors such as vasopressor medication use, poor perfusion and immobility (Alderden et al., 2017). PI prevention, especially in the intensive care population, has been high on healthcare organisations’agenda due to the high level of prevalence, unfavourable patient outcomes and high costs to the healthcare system (Chaboyer et al., 2018;Padula et al., 2018). Research on this topic has been increasing, with many being published in Intensive and Critical Care Nursing. In this retrospective issue, we feature 17 research papers previously published in Intensive and Critical Care Nursing over the last 15 years that report results/findings about PI. The purpose of this retrospective special issue, with a focus on PI prevention, is to showcase and reflect on what has been published, provide a future direction for authors and announce a Call for Papers for a Special Issue to be published in 2024.
