    Abstract

Sometime during the closing months of 1971, or perhaps it was in early 1972, I learnt of the recent establishment of an Institute of Cornish Studies, a joint initiative by the University of Exeter and Cornwall County Council. I read too that Charles Thomas had been appointed the Institute's first Director and also Exeter's very first Professor of Cornish Studies.
