Abstract

INTRODUCTION
As the preceding Lived Experience describes, the initial engagement between the nurse and the consumer is an opportunity to begin to establish rapport, and to demonstrate to the consumer that you can be trusted, care for their welfare and are interested in helping understand their distress. The next section details the nurse's role in mental state assessment.
