Abstract

Background and Aim: Cirrhosis of the liver is a complicated chronic disease often associated with recurrent hospital admissions. Consequently, there is an imminent need for self-management skills in these patients. Partners in Health (PIH) is a tool for assessment of self-management knowledge and behavior in people with a wide range of chronic conditions. It consists of 12 items with a previously validated four-factor structure, namely, Partnership in Treatment, Knowledge, Recognition and Management of Symptoms, and Coping. To date, no research has been conducted on the application of this scale to patients with cirrhosis. Measuring self-management capacity in these patients is imperative to identify domains that can be improved to achieve optimal disease management. Our aim was to assess internal reliability and construct validity of the PIH scale
for patients with cirrhosis.
