Abstract
Quality of life (QOL) has been used as a framework for understanding intellectual and developmental disabilities (I&DD). In this chapter, we provide an historical view of the development of the concept of QOL and then discuss its role in the field of I&DD. Emerging from this came the field of Family Quality of Life (FQOL) as a result of recognition that individuals with I&DD interact with those around them in important ways. Over the decades, the increasing understanding and application of QOL in the field of I&DD has led to principles and practices that we have found are generalisable to the wider world. We explore some of these ideas as a foundation for the chapters that follow in this book.
