Abstract
Crafting Country is the third instalment in the University of Sydney’s Tom Austen Brown Studies in Australasian Archaeology series and is a data-rich narrative about the archaeology of Nyiyaparli Country in Western Australia’s inland Pilbara region. From the outset, Bird and Rhoads make clear the book’s context: an archaeological study of a dataset acquired in a commercial setting, that is, during the course of field surveys and an excavation program in Nyiyaparli Country prior to the development of Fortescue Metals Group’s (FMG) Christmas Creek and Cloudbreak mines in the eastern Chichester ranges. Between 2006 and 2012, consulting company, Archae-Aus Pty Ltd. recorded ‘about 2,000 sites’ (p.53) in the area including 45 rockshelters of which 19 were excavated. In 2013, FMG provided funding for the analysis and publication of these materials that has resulted in Crafting Country.
