Abstract

South Australia has produced a number of famous scientists. Two of especial note are Mark Oliphant and Howard Florey, both of whom won Nobel Prizes {in physics and medicine respectively). Sir Mark Oliphant went on to be Governor of South Australia. There have been many other notable South Australian born scientists, few of whom have become household names. This is the story of one of them.

Richard Miln Smith was born in 1928 in Tumby Bay, a small settlement on the Eyre Peninsula. He grew up in a supportive family environment faced with very challenging economic circumstances. He excelled at school and completed a science degree in chemistry at the University of Adelaide in 1948...
