Abstract
Review of Saving the Reef: The Human Story Behind One of Australia's Greatest Environmental Treasures, by Rohan Lloyd
Between 1967 and 1975, the Great Barrier Reef was a battleground. The Queensland Government under the conservative Country Party wanted to allow oil drilling on the Reef. A committed group of conservationists, including prominent Australians like the poet Judith Wright, joined together to oppose drilling and to have the Reef protected. Their ‘Save the Reef’ Campaign was enormously successful, striking a nerve with the broader Australian public and getting support from the Federal Government too. It remains a land-mark of Australian environmental and political history and shapes human interactions with the Reef to the present.
