Abstract
Sexual conduct between a doctor and a patient is an issue that has attracted the attention of the Social Issues Committee (SIC). This interest was prompted by recent developments within the AMA. In February 1995 the AMA Western Australian Branch held a Summit in Perth on "Ethics and Medicine" and the Resolution from the Summit on Sexual conduct between doctors and patients was discussed by SIC members.
The Federal Council of the AMA later decided that the Perth Summit's Resolution did not advance the current AMA Position Statement on "Sexual Conduct between doctors and their patients" October 1994, which has since been accepted as AMA policy and incorporated in their Handbook of Resolutions. However, there were earlier Draft Resolutions that had originated from the AMA's Women and Medicine Committee (reported in Australian Medicine, 18 April 1994, p. 6), one of which was that a medical practitioner who engages in sexual activity with a current patient is guilty of professional misconduct. For whatever reason the word "current" was not incorporated in the policy statement.
