Abstract

Aim of Abstract: The aim of the symposium is to provide an overview of the opportunities for addressing tobacco use with people with substance abuse problems. The presentations will explore three aspects of providing smoking cessation support to people receiving treatment for other drug use: (i) the need to address smoking amongst opioid substitution clients; (ii) the potential of organisational change interventions for smoking cessation within drug and alcohol treatment centres; and (iii) the outcomes of a randomised trial of a smoking and other health behaviours intervention in a residential drug and alcohol treatment centre. The authors will draw on their research findings to present their arguments and a discussion of barriers and practical solutions for implementation will follow. Nature of Interactive Element: The presentations will be followed by a discussion session led by Professor Robert West between the audience and presenters.
