South Australia: July–December 2025

South Australian politics over the period saw big changes for the major parties. The Liberal opposition installed Ashton Hurn as its second female leader. Labor faced retirements of senior Ministers Susan Close and Stephen Mullighan. The crossbench also faced upheaval. Upper House MP Frank Pangallo joined the Liberal Party while Sarah Game formed a new party vehicle. In the lower house, former Liberal turned independent Troy Bell was expelled from Parliament due to a criminal conviction, and Nick McBride, another independent former Liberal, was held in custody over domestic violence charges. These party-political movements took place against the backdrop of the continued crises regarding the algal bloom and health system, while newly minted Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis delivered a mid-year budget statement projecting healthy surpluses and falling debt and the SA voice to Parliament made its second annual report to state parliament.
