    Abstract

While there is no prevention or cure for the spondyloarthropathies, most patients can be effectively managed. The GP has the vital and central role of monitoring symptoms, toxicity of drug therapies, and the patient's level of pain, as well as ensuring adherence to an exercise programme. This article describes the features of the spondyloarthropathies and gives advice on how to prevent or minimise deformity and disability.
