Abstract

This report details the history of the screw ship Monumental City from its construction in 1850 at Baltimore, USA to the loss of the vessel on the Victorian coastline in 1853. In October 1984 staff from the Maritime Archaeological Unit (MAU) carried out a preliminary site survey with the aim of assessing the extent of the remaining structure and the working conditions on the site and photographing the wreckage. The results of this preliminary investigation are described and discussed in this report and recommendations regarding the management and future investigation of the site are made.
