Abstract
We have all experienced stress at some time in our lives from our studies, work, or relationships with friends, family and partners. Exposure to stress can improve our performance in the short term, but if it goes on for too long it can become chronic and lead to stress overload. When stress becomes chronic it can impair concentration, motivation and sleep, and can lead to behaviours such as social isolation, excessive alcohol use, smoking, over-eating and lack of exercise, all of which impair health. Long-term exposure to stress can, therefore, contribute to physical and mental health problems. This chapter discusses acute and chronic stress.
