Abstract

13C CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy shows that [Mg(anthraceneXTHF)2], derived from decomposition of [Mg(anthraceneKTHF)3], has Mg-C9,10 interactions and that Mg(cyclooctatetraeneXTHF)2.5 has an aromatic dianion: graphite accelerates the decomposition of [Mg(anthraceneXTHF)3], in toluene (via[Mg(anthraceneXTHF)2]) or diethyl ether, to its constituents, affording highly activated and finely divided magnesium (ca. 6 /μm) rather than an intercalation compound.
