Surfacing

    Abstract

The idea for this story sparked while I was listening to Sean Williams give an hour-long talk about matter transmitters, in which he discussed some of the moral and philosophical implications of being "beamed up" - fascinating concepts that far surpassed anything I'd ever thought of while watching Star Trek. While "Surfacing" is, ultimately, not a matter transmitter story, it explores some of the problems this form of transport highlights: what happens to the "real us" when people dematerialise? What is lost each time we come apart? What remains?
