Synthesis and x-ray crystal structure of a Wv metallocycle [{W(CH2C6H4CH2-o)2O} 2Mg(tetrahydrofuran)4]

Reaction of [WCl4(O)] with either o-C6H 4(CH2MgCl)2 or Mg{(CH2) 2C6H4-o}(thf) in tetrahydrofuran (thf) gives the Wv complex [{W(CH2C6H4CH 2-o)2-O}2 Mg(thf)4], (1) via W v oxochloride intermediates; single crystal X-ray diffraction of the complex (1) shows that one of the o-xylidene chelating ligands has a large fold angle (66.1°, cf. 42.4° for the other) possibly owing to an aromatic π-interaction with the tungsten atom.
