Abstract
Taiwan needs to build soft power to overcome its international challenges. Emphasising democratic values through Mandarin language teaching is an effective way to achieve this. Initiatives like Taiwan Centers for Mandarin Learning (TCMLs) promote Taiwanese culture but so far lack explicit inclusion of democratic values in their materials and activities. This misses an opportunity to differentiate Taiwan from the People’s Republic of China and leverage its unique democratic soft power.
