Abstract
Second language (L2) writing has been considered one of the most crucial and demanding skills for L2 learners to acquire, both cognitively and communicatively. It has also been a long-standing research interest of Hassan and Martin. Advances in technology have in many ways facilitated communication in writing and have brought to the fore the need for writers to develop digital literacy. At the same time, as Martin has made clear elsewhere (East & Slomp, 2023), advances in technology bring to the fore many questions and concerns, in particular in the arena of writing assessment. Technology changes rapidly, influences how we write and the identities we assume as authors, the shape of the final product, and how we interact with readers. This leads to the necessity to transform the L2 curriculum (for a recent review of L2 writing research in the last two decades, see Sun & Lan, 2023)...
