Abstract

his has been a year like no other. It started with catastrophic bushfires following serious drought and continued with the uncertainties, isolation and economic impacts of COVID-19. The cumulative impacts on the mental health and well-being of rural residents, their health and support staff and local leaders have been significant. The 12th Rural and Remote Mental Health Symposium (26-28 October 2020) was timely and built on the success and learnings from previous symposia.1, 2 The outstanding efforts of the Australia and New Zealand Mental Health Association meant that we were able to meet on a virtual platform with live plenary and panel sessions and recorded parallel sessions.
