The 42nd Hong Kong International Film Festival, Hong Kong, 19 March-5 April 2018

    Abstract

It would be pat, at this point, to pronounce the death of Hong Kong’s film
industry. The local industry’s insular turn in response to ascendant Mainland
production has been well documented. Still, as the 42nd Hong Kong
International Film Festival (HKIFF) sidestepped the long-standing tradition
of presenting at least one home-grown work on opening night, the absence
of the parochial fanfare that would typically greet a high-profile local opener
was keenly felt in an increasingly volatile and contested exhibition landscape.
