Abstract

J. Davis McCaughey was a leading member of the committee that drafted the Basis of Union of the Uniting Church in Australia. At the time of the publication of the Basis of Union, McCaughey wrote a brief commentary to help members of the Congregational, Methodist and Presbyterian churches understand and evaluate the Basis and to decide whether or not to vote in favour of church union. Andrew Dutney, the leading scholar in the history and theology of the Uniting Church in Australia and, especially, the Basis of Union, has recovered MsCaughey's early commentary for contemporary readers. He provides a detailed introduction to the document and a fresh rendering of the text for today's readers.
