Abstract

This book discusses the formation and evolution of the burgesses in the kingdom of Cyprus who originally migrated there from Latin Syria and Western Europe and consisted of Latins and Syrian Roman Catholics. Over time this group of peop[le, consisitng of jurists, traders and artisans, broadened ethnically and confessionally to include Greeks, Syrian Melkites and Armenians. Their activities on Cyprus as legal counsellors to the kings and nobility of Cyprus and as traders, especially in Famagusta, the kingdom's premier port, are examined and analysed, with special chapters devoted to their role in Genoese Famagusta and the interaction between Cypriot burgesses and those in Hospitaller Rhodes and Western Europe.
