Abstract

Ros, a young boy living on a drought-stricken farm, makes friends with the invisible Escher, who begins to train him in the magic of the Change. Then Kuller, a sinister weather worker, comes to the farm to bring rain, and Escher warns Ros that his life is in danger. Desperate to escape, Ros steals a camel from a local inn and heads for the road.

On the road he meets a Clan of nomads, among them Adi, a girl of his age who takes him under her wing. When Adi is snatched by the spider–like Crabblers, Ros uses his new magic skills to find her, but is unable to stop her from plunging off a cliff. Ros is grief–stricken, and soon seems to be haunted by her ghost.

But enlisting the help of a Stone Mage to exorcise the ghost only leads Ros to question everything that has happened on his journey. He must decide who is telling the truth, and who his real friends are.
