Abstract

The Deep North is the first African-Australian musical. It is a combination of videography, theatre, visual art, traditional African design, contemporary African hip hop and traditional African folk melodies. It was created in close partnership and consultation with the African-Australian community and was a result of practice lead, community engaged, qualitative research, in conjunction with rapper DyspOra, composer James Bannah and poet, Pontsho Nthupi. This unique co-creative process informed the structure of casting, design and dramaturgy of the outcome and led to the new knowledge of an African Australian musical.
