Abstract

In August 2019 India revoked its Constitution's Article 370, an action that stripped Kashmir of the special status it has held for 70 years. The article provided for the Kashmir state's autonomy over internal administration and allowed it to have its own constitution and its own flag. Although this status has been steadily undermined over the years since its promulgation in 1954, India's abolition of Kashmir's self-rule came as a shock to many, and drew criticism both in India and internationally. With the full implications of India's action now beginning to show, Kashmir's future is fraught with uncertainty.
