Abstract
Data relating to voluntary childlessness are reviewed in order to assess the possibility of an increase in the incidence of the lifestyle in Australia. Economic change, development in contraceptive technology and attitudinal change are isolated as particularly relevant in determining rates of childlessness. The social implications of nonparenthood are considered.
