Abstract

This study examines the relationship between Fintech and entrepreneurial development in a global sample of 79 countries spanning from 2013 to 2019. We utilise a novel dataset from the Bank for International Settlements to proxy for Fintech lending and employ the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor dataset to construct an entrepreneurship development index. Our findings consistently demonstrate a positive association between Fintech adoption and entrepreneurial development, indicating that increased Fintech adoption is associated with higher levels of country-level entrepreneurial ventures. Our results are robust to alternative proxies and two-step System GMM model addressing endogeneity concerns. These results carry important implications for policymakers, financial institutions, and entrepreneurs. Overall, our study underscores the transformative potential of Fintech in driving entrepreneurship development and fostering economic prosperity globally.
