    Abstract

This pape reviews Australian and international literature to examine the effect of poverty on children's readiness to learn. It includes a discussion of how children's readiness and ability to learn can be nurtured from birth, and how poverty places a child's healthy developmental pathway at risk. The paper concludes with a discussion of the barriers to the introduction of successful early intervention programs in Australia.
