Abstract

While acknowledging that in Australian Indigenous culture there is a long tradition of the delivery of medical care, this chapter will focus on the practice of medicine in Australia provided by those practitioners educated in the 'Western' practice of medicine. Medicine in Australia has been practised by individuals trained in this manner since the beginning of white settlement in the latter part of the 18th century, with the arrival of several doctors on the first fleet in 1788 (Lewis 2014).
