Abstract
The aim of the study was to monitor women aged 65 years and over, for any psycho-social or other health related condition after they had experienced a disaster in Japan. This study looked at older people who have experienced relocation to new housing in the Iwate prefecture, one of the three affected prefectures by the 2011 Great East Japan disaster. The findings showed that although the participants were grateful to be alive and have temporary housing, some reported that they were depressed and could not get over the impact of the disaster. Providing counselling, encouraging activities and enhancing the feeling of belonging to new communities were recommendations for supporting older women and minimising the risk of depression.
