Abstract

Little attention has been given to how personal safety is navigated by disabled children in ways that lead to a full and flourishing childhood and not one that is either overly protected or blighted by abuse. While rights-based statements abound, activity that increases the authority of children and young people themselves is less visible. Drawing on co-produced research with disabled children and young people about safety and abuse prevention, this chapter discusses their perspectives and priorities, explores how resistance might be addressed in ways that promote young people’s authority about their own lives, and offers ideas for generating rights-informed change.
