The Short Story Train: a Concatrenation

Abstract

How do train stories work distinctively?

This paper seeks to understand how stories set on trains enable clear beginnings and endings and a unifying structure.
It proposes to do this by hypothesising/identifying tropes that appear in train stories and testing them for exclusive veracity
Train compartments contain passengers in a diorama moving through panoramas [setting]. Interior carriage provocations and baggage brought aboard can catalyse action [psychology and plot], lead to powerful human connections and revelations, and test existing class and identity structures [subjects and themes].
Train narratives move sets of characters in a circumstantially passive state [sitting standing]; and yet enough agency to move around, change carriages, exercise in a limited way.
Train stories can present social microcosms or capsules of meaning.
