Abstract

Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a rare neurodegenerative disorder affecting areas of the spinal cord, brainstem, and cortex and is characterized by cell loss primarily affecting the autonomic and motor systems. The estimated global incidence is approximately 0.6/100,000 per annum, with a higher incidence of 3/100,000 per annum in those aged over 50 years.1 The mean onset age is 50 to 70 years2 and average life expectancy from onset of symptoms is approximately 7 years.3
