Abstract

Objective: The aim of this review is to provide an overview of studies that describe healthcare professionals’ experiences with providing health-and care services in rural contexts in Arctic, and sub Arctic regions. The purpose is to explore and describe the key themes addressed, and to identify knowledge gaps that warrant further investigation, thereby contributing to a more informed understanding of rural healthcare contexts in the Arctic.

This, for developing knowledge for building robust healthcare services that can support the recruitment and retention of personnel in these areas. It is equally important to ensure that healthcare professionals are adequately prepared for the challenges associated with Arctic, rural practice. Patients must also feel confident that they receive the health and care services to which they are entitled as residents of these regions.
Inclusion criteria: To map existing evidence, the review will consider This scoping review will include primary research studies published between 2016 and 2026, encompassing qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods designs, as well as relevant scoping reviews, doctoral and master’s theses, and research reports which describes reasons for living and working rural for health carers, and how they handle being far away from specialist healthcare services.Policy documents and opinion based publications will be excluded.
Eligible studies must be based on data from Arctic, Sub-Arctic, or northern areas within Norway, Sweden, Finland, the Åland Islands, Iceland, Denmark, the United Kingdom, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Alaska (USA), Canada, or Russia, and must explicitly describe the rural and/or remote context of healthcare delivery.
Method: Medline, PubMed, ProQuest-ERIC (education collection), ProQuest Central, ProQuest (Theses and Dissertations), Web of Science, Scopus and CINAHL (EBSCO) will be searched. Studies published from inception onwards and written in English will be assessed for inclusion. Studies meeting the inclusion criteria will be assessed for methodological quality and data will be extracted.
